Terra di nessuno

1993
Terra di nessuno
is a stage performance that only sees an actress on stage. The live voice is the earliest cell of the acoustic environment around the audience, but it is not a monologue, there are other voices and other sounds partly coming from acoustic landscapes of cities: the presence is not limited to the factual place, it is part of a wider geography.

Terra di nessuno looks at Walter Benjamin’s work – especially his monument to the fragment Das Passagen-Werk is taken into consideration -; his text develops between poetic and philosophical writing, in a postponement of mutual admissions of surrender, where body and voice alternate for tension and truce. The sound gives back a three-dimensionality to an essentially two-dimensional and pictorial work: the use of hardware and software allow the acoustic complexity necessary to deepen the dramaturgy of the work.

RPD

Terra di nessuno is the experience of disorientation and loss. It is the experience of an identity in its fragmentation rather than in its recomposition, made plural, in having as a condition a state of permanent mobility of thought. Terra di nessuno approaches a place, a time, a condition that are those of instability and impermanence. The territory of the fragment, of partiality, of childhood. […]
Its most intimate structure is that of a field of rubble as it appears in the eyes of the survivor who, wounded, awakens in the aftermath of a battle or catastrophic bombardment. The field of rubble is that of European culture: this is the dream from which, against all historical fiction of continuity, we must awaken. But, against any attempt at escape, this is also the only place where we can wake up. IB RPD
