Dylan Delay

It is a multi-format project by Giardini Pensili, the result of the collaboration between Roberto Paci Dalò and Gabriele Frasca, dedicated to and inspired by the poet, author and radio star Dylan Thomas (1914 – 1953). It is a multifaceted stage work, which includes a show, a conference, a performance, a live radio and a workshop. The aim is to launch, mix, decompose and multiply the voice of Dylan Thomas himself.

Roberto Paci Dalò and Gabriele Frasca are inspired by the radio celebrity of Dylan Thomas.

Writer and essayist, he wrote poems, autobiographical stories, as well as the famous radio and theatre drama Under Milk Wood, which won the Prix Italia in 1954.

The work by Roberto Paci Dalò and Gabriele Frasca is a sophisticated acoustic composition in which the fragments of Under milk Wood are mixed with the deafening noises of the bombardments and the intermittent frequencies of the radio. Moreover, many sound landscapes of post-war America are evoked in this work: from the sounds of the recording studios of the BBC, to the subversive and dissolute dramatic representations of the time; from the discreet promiscuity of the American colleges, to the inverse promiscuity of the provincial pubs, in a moment of unique cultural ferment for the contemporary music scene, due to the fatal combination of old and new acoustic technologies that give life, for example, to the free-jazz…

Dylan Thomas and BBC

In the immediate post-war period the popularity of Dylan Thomas grew dramatically, first in Great Britain and then especially in the United States. This did not depend so much on the alleged simplification of poetic structures, which had become established over time precisely because of the power pursued by the darkness of his images, but on the effect of popular dragging of what the poet himself would later define his nitrites over the air. Dylan Thomas had discovered, among BBC equipment, the most powerful vocal amplifier known to man: the microphone.

Roberto Paci Dalò and Gabriele Frasca give space in their work to the sound evocation of the BBC recording studios: its role in the career of the radio star was crucial.

The BBC was the constant interpreter of the Welsh poet, who it hosted in its studios since 1937. Then, during the second war, in the middle of the “war of the waves” — when the English radio station, counted up to 11,600 employees– Dylan Thomas found in the BBC a real ally: not only did it provide him with adequate financial support, but it also represented the real means through which to show its engagement on the internal front. In those years the BBC gave great public resonance to its “American readings” of Dylan Thomas. Finally, it was this collaboration that gave birth, in 1954, a few months after the death of the poet, to the radio masterpiece Under Milk Wood.

Unconventional in both content and form, Thomas was even the first to go beyond the traditional ways of publishing his work. Instead of a book, a standard popular model, he launched a record on the American market.

LUFT / DYLAN DELAY.

In April 2014, in Cesena, Gabriele Frasca and Roberto Paciò Dalò present, conduct and perform at the Magazzino Parallelo with Radio Garbino, a workshop of “media dramaturgy: radio, theater and web”, called LUFT / DYLAN DELAY.

LUFT is a traveling school of expanded and adventurous radio, built in various places in Italy and from time to time is redesigned in relation to the context.  It avails itself of the collaboration and participation of various radio militants. It is the result of the successful collaboration between ORF Kunstradio Vienna, Teatro Valle Occupato, L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora Mondaino, Università La Sapienza Roma, Womb Lecce, Monferrarti and Magazzino Parallelo Cesena.

In Cesena LUFT leads a didactic workshop on Dylan Delay, an exemplary model of radio theory and practice. From here the title LUFT / DYLAN DELAY.

They work with participants on the link between radio and other media. Among the topics covered are the following: webradio, radio and telematics, network projects, textual radio relationship, new concept of radio drama, soundscape, software and hardware, live radio and live media, radio space as a place of performance.

Gabriele Frasca and Roberto Paci Dalò seal the didactic activity by performing live the performance “Dylan Delay”.
