In Darkness Let Me Dwell

2018
The historical archive of the Banco di Napoli becomes the subject of a film by Roberto Paci Dalò based on a cinematic exploration of this extraordinary place. A journey into the details, into the folds of History and stories made of images that will speak through sounds, some of which are precisely those of the pages of the folders that, leafed through and elaborated, through light electronics, will become ambient music. The sound of the archive, its voice. Using black and white, a timeless work will be created that will give life to a suspended state of mind, attentive to these documents.

It could seem like a film noir shot in the 40s with the lights and shadows of that world, with that aesthetic so exciting and mysterious. A work on writing, on calligraphy, on paper and ink; a celebration of the knowledge and stories of the people carefully documented in books. The lives of those who have lived in Naples over the centuries; a great fresco of the city itself and its amorous geographies; a mapping in motion. As Giuliana Bruno says, evoking Walter Benjamin: “It is not dates that create the memory that History recalls. History – like personal microhistory – “takes place” in places”. A journey into the library of the world. A tactile territory made of cinema as a means of transport in time and space. A moving cartography where the narrative territory of geography.  can expand into history. Thinking of film cartography as a tool for cultural mapping can be a way to access the changing geography of intimate space and to question, on psychogeographical ground, the function of the image archive with respect to the drawing of new maps.
The work deepens the work of the artist who in 2009 with the film “Atlas of Emotion Stream” (commissioned by the PAN Palazzo delle Arti in Naples) continued a research on the city of Naples itself that had already begun in 1993 with the work Napoli, ritratto acustica della città.
