Organo Magico Organo Laico

2006
Organo Magico Organo Laico
is a multimedial, scenic and musical project by Roberto Paci Dalò designed to enhance the value of an ancient Mantuan organ of the nineteenth century, enigmatically placed in a “secular” place. Not in a church, but inside a theatre, the mysterious and “magic” sound object is located in the Reggio Emilia Valleys and is inaccessible to the gaze of the public in the hall. The project includes the creation of ten new musical scores composed ad hoc for the precious organ, which finally becomes the protagonist of the theatrical scene. In addition, some architectural and constituent details of the organ are shown to the public through the projection of some of its details on large white canvases placed on the proscenium.

The Teatro Municipale Valli di Reggio Emilia is proud of its unique musical instrument: an ancient pipe organ supported by sturdy shelves at a height of about three metres, which develop on one of the two side walls of the stage. For this reason, it is inaccessible to the view of the public. It is a “Montesanti Organ”, named by the famous Mantuan organ-maker Luigi Montesanti and dates back to 1815. Its “secular” location is exceptional compared to the Italian theatre scene.  Organo Magico Organo Laico aims to emphasize this instrument not in a museum sense, but by inserting it in a multimedia and expressive project, which projects this “object of memory” in a dimension of strong contemporaneity. The original pieces have been composed by Roberto Paci Dalò, Andrea Agostini, Maurizio Ferrari, Francesco Filidei, Francesco La Licata, Mauro Lanza, Olga Neuwirth, Helmut Oehring, Walter Prat and Andi Toma (Mouse on Mars).

Between tradition and innovation

In addition, a “transformation” of the Teatro Valli is planned to allow the public a greater enjoyment of the show. The architectural details of the instrument, filmed by cameras, are projected in live video on large surfaces of the theater between the stage and the audience, a space in which the public can dispose and move freely. The images are displayed on the surfaces of the hall, covered with large white tulle ” screens “, and also include some internal and external details of the theatre itself.
In radically rethinking the way of living and enjoying a historically characterized environment such as the Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, Organo Magico Organo Laico intends to stimulate a dialectic tradition/innovation, to project the public towards new forms of scenic fruition.

A secular organ, a magic organ

The director Roberto Paci Dalò explains : “A wide and pulsating breath that comes from the instrument itself, object and subject of the work. Stage and audience merge in a single space completely transformed in its appearance, function, atmosphere; the public can move freely.
The sound of the organ expands among the audience and invests it with its image projected on large screens/walls that reorganize the articulation of the space; the amplification is enveloping and reverberates in the new acoustically uneven environment. Through the nine world premiere compositions, mirroring the sensibilities and expressive moods of their authors, and the special set conceived ad hoc by Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars, the organ becomes a “character”, enters the scene, a monologue and a dialogue, acts, whispers, wins, invests senses and fragments of life. An organ in theatre, a secular organ, a magic organ”. The Ensemble Icarus performs the music.
